While They Play

Nick Conti, 2026

While They Play is an ongoing photographic study of my three sons moving through childhood. The images are made during ordinary moments of play, boredom, routine, and imagination.

While the boys move freely through their days, they remain untouched by the unseen weight surrounding them (financial stress, shifting relationships, responsibilities, and the pressures of adulthood). Their focus remains simple: “How do I return to play as soon as possible?”

Through these observations I see traces of my own childhood. I pause daily stress to witness time moving quietly, hair grows longer, seasons change, faces collect dirt, snow becomes spring and the kids play…

This series is presented as an infinite scroll of panoramic images. The format mirrors how we now consume images daily. Constant movement, quick impressions, and continuous flow. Rather than resisting that language, the work uses it. Each images appears as a fleeting moment within a larger stream of time. If the viewer chooses, a photograph can be selected and enlarged individually, allowing a pause within the motion. The series can be experienced as both one uninterrupted story and as seperate moments worthy of stillness.
