The Art of Focus at High Ground Jiu-Jitsu

What started as a personal project for my Art of Focus series quickly turned into an incredible opportunity to document the energy and culture inside High Ground Jiu-Jitsu in Monroeville.

During the session, instructor Evan Mulgrave led classes filled with intensity, discipline, and focus, all the elements that make Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu such a powerful sport to photograph. Every movement, reaction, and moment on the mat tells a story.

What makes Jiu-Jitsu so visually interesting?

The balance between physical movement and mental focus. It’s fast, technical, and deeply intentional. That connection to concentration and presence is exactly what inspired my Art of Focus series in the first place.

Authentic photography does more than just look good.

For businesses like local gyms and training facilities, authentic photography helps communicate culture, build trust, and give potential members a real sense of the environment before they ever walk through the door.

This project was a reminder that some of the best creative work happens when personal passion and storytelling come together naturally.
